Water Works

We’ve got good news and bad news. The Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown metropolitan areas’ export numbers are higher than the national metropolitan average. But we’re underperforming when it comes to export innovation, one of the hallmarks of successful exporters. The news came in a late-August Brookings Institution report that said the region has built the foundation for increased exports and new jobs. But the Washington D.C.-based think tank also noted Northeast Ohio “must accelerate its efforts to increase the region’s innovation and export capacity through regional organizations such as NorTech and JumpStart.” Here were some of the other numbers — all from 2008, the most recent figures available — the report uncovered.

95 Percent of the world’s customers who live outside the U.S.

64 Percent of U.S. exports produced by major metropolitan areas

170,000 Approximate total number of export jobs in the Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown areas

5,800 Average number of jobs in metropolitan areas supported by every

$1 billion in exports

13 Percentage of gross metropolitan product tied to exports in the Cleveland metro area (12 percent in Akron, 18 percent in Youngstown)

10.9 National average percentage of gross metropolitan product tied to exports

5 Average number of patents per 1,000 workers from metropolitan exporters

2.8 Average number of patents per 1,000 workers from Cleveland metro area’s exporters (4.5 in Akron, 1 in Youngstown)
