John Crooks
Associate provost, Lorain County Community College University Partnership program
LCCC

Q: What can I expect the classroom atmosphere to be like?
A: The learning environment of the 20th century — lecture halls with students in rows — is changing. Classrooms of the 21st century are embracing the concept of learning studios, which allow for flexible classrooms. These classrooms can be set up for discussions, lectures and other types of student interactions during the class and throughout the day. Technology enhancements allow learning to be 24/7 with such features as iTunes U, online course management systems and on-demand video. Simulations, case studies and scenarios are being implemented to provide real-life context to both lectures and laboratories. Classroom response systems have allowed for greater engagement and motivation to our newest generation of college students. The new learning paradigm is about creating challenging yet engaging environments that ask the learner to take greater ownership of their learning experience — and when given the opportunity, the results are truly amazing.
